The 509th Composite Group was created to plan and execute the deployment of the first atomic bomb. Gen. Paul Tibbets headed up that
group and flew a B-29 named The Enola Gay in August 1945 and completed the mission that many feel brought a quick end to World War II.

A Veteran Remembers... Lt. Col. Thomas Classen, quiet hero and Deputy Commander of the 509th. Recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross for a gun battle from his B17 with eight Japanese Zeros. He expertly trained the 393rd Bomb Squadron which became the nucleus of the 509th.
